Big Blue Kitten Makes Point in
Updated: Saturday, August 17, 2013 7:43 PM Photo: Coglianese Photos
Big Blue Kitten rallies for the win in the Sword Dancer Stakes (G1). Big Blue Kitten, given a patient ride by Joe Bravo, burst through an opening at mid-stretch and swept past Twilight Eclipse late to post a one-length win in the $600,000 Sword Dancer Stakes (gr. IT) Aug. 17 at Saratoga Race Course (VIDEO). The 5-year-old Ken and Sarah Ramsey homebred was coming off a victory in the United Nations Stakes (gr. IT) July 6, giving the son of Kitten’s Joy back-to-back victories in two of the nation’s major turf races for trainer Chad Brown. Twilight Eclipse was second with French invader Nutello third in his North American debut. The final time for the 1 1/2-mile Sword Dancer was 2:26.46 over firm going. Big Blue Kitten surpassed $1 million in career earnings with the victory, but the good news was just beginning for the Ramseys. Moments later, they captured the Secretariat Stakes (gr. IT) with Admiral Kitten at Arlington Park. “To get back-to-back grade Is with Kitten’s Joys, the Sword Dancer and the Secretariat—that’s too much,” said Ken Ramsey from the metropolitan Chicago track. Brown has bigger plans for Big Blue Kitten down the road. “He’s a Breeders’ Cup-caliber horse at 1 1/2 miles on firm turf at Santa Anita,” trainer Chad Brown said. “What race we use to get there, I’m not sure, but we’ll probably only run him one time until the Breeders’ Cup (Turf).” Second choice Big Blue Kitten trailed the field of 12 after a half mile as his entry mate Stormy Lord took the early lead an opened up a two-length advantage over Tahoe Lake and Nutello. Stormy Lord stepped an opening half in :49.80 and a mile in 1:39.41 but the solid pace took its toll as stalking 40-1 shot London Lane took a brief lead on the outside at the quarter p ole. London Lane was under pressure in upper stretch as Twilight Eclipse, who had saved ground under Javier Castellano to the second turn, battled Nutello and Jose Lezcano on his inside for the lead. Twilight Eclipse had a half-length edge at the furlong mark. But Big Blue Kitten, eased off the hedge rounding the turn, waited for room between rivals and closed powerfully to hit the front past the sixteenth pole under right-handed urging from Bravo. Quickly in command approaching the wire, Big Blue Kitten eased up in the final strides. Brown credited Bravo for the victory. “He has so much confidence in this horse since the first time he rode him” in the Monmouth Stakes, Brown said. “He really talked me into running in the United Nations and I was super confident bringing him up here and keeping him on this horse. “In the paddock, Joe felt he was the winner every step of the way. He says, ‘I just love this horse. I’ll work the trip out (from the inside),’ and he did.” “At the top of the lane, he had them horses come over on him a little bit,” Bravo said. “All I had to do was swing him out and get him clear, and he did the rest. (Brown) did all the hard work. He just gave me the confidence in the horse. “The happiest I was was turning for home. I’m looking at each rider and they’re riding their horses, and I hadn’t even asked the Kitten yet.” Twilight Eclipse was second by 1 3/4 lengths over Nutello, with Tannery just a head back in fourth. Al Khali, London Lane, Star Channel, 19-10 favorite Boisterous, Exclusive Strike, Tahoe Lake, and Stormy Lord followed. Optimizer was eased on the backstretch but left the course walking. Phipps Stable’s Boisterous, who defeated Big Blue Kitten in the Monmouth Stakes (gr. IIT) June 9 and was coming off a 2 1/4-length score in the Man o’ War Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont Park, was in a good stalking position on the outside rounding the far turn but dropped back in the drive. “I thought (Boisterous) was in perfect position the whole way,” said trainer Shug McGaughey. “He made a little run coming towards the quarter pole, but he just didn’t finish. He had been doing good. I don’t know what happened.” Big Blue Kitten, out of the Unaccounted For mare Spent Gold, registered his fourth win in six starts this year while boosting his overall mark to 10-2-4 in 17 outings. He has banked $1,058,530 after collecting $360,000 for the Sword Dancer triumph. He won the United Nations by 1 1/4 lengths at Monmouth Park, coming from well back that day as well. The bay horse captured the 2011 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes (gr. IIT) at Saratoga in his only prior start at Saratoga. Under co-high weight of 123 pounds, Big Blue Kitten paid $7.90, $4.30, and $3.50. Twilight Eclipse returned $4.70 and $4.10, completing a $36.20 exacta. Nutello paid $6.40 to show. 2–Twilight Eclipse, 120, g, 4, Purim–My Twilight 3–Nutello, 116, c, 4, Lemon Drop Kid–Nutcase, by BIG BLUE KITTEN looking to double his Grade I tally after a rousing victory in the GI United Nations July 6, overcame some traffic issues in the stretch and rallied home an ultra-impressive winner of this. The Ramsey homebred was near the back of the pack early as entrymate Stormy Lord (Stormy Atlantic) led the way, setting honest, but not suicidal, splits of :49 4/5, 1:14 1/5 and 1:39 2/5. Jockey Joe Bravo crept Big Blue Kitten Closer on the far turn, but had to wait for room as several rivals got the jump on them, including Twilight Eclipse (Purim), who hit the front a furlong out. Once in the clear, however, Big Blue Kitten unleashed a furious turn of foot and sailed past Twilight Eclipse for the one-length victory. Click for the brisnet.com chart or VIDEO.
ARLINGTON MILLION
Grade 1 Real Solution Wins Million By DQ; Third GISW on Day for Sire, Connections next article — 10th at APX GI Arlington Million [1 1/4m (T)] Winner: Real Solution, c, 4 by Kitten’s Joy Saturday, Arlington Park
2–The Apache (SAf)*, 126, h, 6, Mogok–Apache Rose Real Solution completed what has to be a near-unprecedented feat in racing when he was put up by the stewards to be the third Grade I-winning homebred for his sire and connections on the afternoon. Real Solution, playing the waiting game early, rallied strongly under Alan Garcia, only to come up a head short to The Apache (SAf) (Mogok) on the line. Garcia lodged an objection, however, and the head-on revealed that The Apache and Christophe Soumillon came out a few paths and bumped Real Solution several times. Stewards made the DQ, giving Real Solution his first Grade I success. “This is right up there with winning the GI Dubai World Cup,” said ebullient owner Ken Ramsey, who noted Kitten’s Joy suffered a career-ending injury when second in the Million a few years ago. “That vindicates the old man,” added Ramsey. “And I think the stud fee is going up from $50,000!” The Ramsey’s Big Blue Kitten won the GI Sword Dancer Saturday, while Admira l Kitten captured the GI Secretariat S. Lifetime Record: 8-4-1-1.
Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s homebred Admiral Kitten closed with a strong late run in the Aug. 17 Secretariat Stakes (gr. IT) at Arlington Park, then opened to a 1 1/4-length victory to win his first grade I. FROM THE BLOOD-HORSE MAGAZINE — Secretariat is Admiral Kitten’s First Grade I Updated: Saturday, August 17, 2013 10:34 PM Admiral Kitten sweeps by Stormy Len to win the Secretariat. Ken Ramsey brought his grandkids to the races as usual, and in the $500,000 Secretariat Stakes (gr. IT), Admiral Kitten and jockey Rosie Napravnik got the job done. The two parties met in the Arlington Park winner’s circle Aug. 17, celebrating the first grade I victory for another son of the Ramseys’ popular sire, Kitten’s Joy (VIDEO). It was a huge afternoon for the runners of Kitten’s Joy, as just moments before the Secretariat, Big Blue Kitten won the $600,000 Sword Dancer Invitational (gr. IT) at Saratoga Race Course. They would also go on to win the Arlington Million (gr. IT) with Real Solution. The last race for sophomore Admiral Kitten, a Mike Maker trainee, was a tough loss as the bay colt missed the July 13 American Derby (gr. IIIT) by a head to Infinite Magic. He was also second in the May 25 Arlington Classic (gr. IIT) and in the May 3 American Turf Stakes (gr. IIT) at Churchill Downs. In fact, Admiral Kitten had quite a case of seconditis, dating back to a runner-up finish in allowance company at Keeneland April 2. He had not won since taking the El Joven Stakes at Retama Park last Nov. 11, a victory that came on the heels of his debut maiden win at Keeneland on the all weather track last Oct. 5. “After four second-place finishes, we were due for a good trip one of these times,” Maker said. “He had lost ground to the winners in those races, and Rosie saved ground on both turns here, and he came with his run.” Admiral Kitten was 10th near the inside when 14-1 shot Stormy Len went out to set the pace for a :24.96 quarter, a :49.91 half, and three-quarters in 1:14.22. He continued to move up between foes down the backstretch, and commenced a steady advance into fifth heading into the second bend as a mile went in 1:38.13. Napravnik attested to the class of the young runner who swung four wide nearing upper stretch and continued with a sold closing response to wrest command and kick clear under firm handling. Admiral Kitten clocked 1 1/4 miles on firm turf in 2:02.17. “He’s very laid back, very enjoyable to ride,” the jockey said. “We were able to sit back and relax, that’s kind of the horse’s style. We got a clear trip around the second turn and he was just finishing fast.” Admiral Kitten returned $12.40, $5, and $3.20. Stormy Len held on to bring $14.40 and $6.80, with 5-2 favorite Jack Milton paying $3 to show. “It was a great run,” trainer David Donk said of Stormy Len’s runner-up finish; the Harlan’s Holiday colt came off a third in the American Derby. “It’s a process, and he’s still developing, and I’m impressed that he’s as good as he is as a 3-year-old. I wish he would have had a chance to see the winner a little bit sooner, but I’m happy for Rosie, and that winner is a nice horse.” Draw Two, Visiyani, Amen Kitten, Balthazar, First Cornerstone, Tattenham, Yeager, Rydilluc, Golden Jason, and Bethel completed the order of finish. Bred in Kentucky out of the Grand Slam mare Reachinforthestars, Admiral Kitten now has three wins and four seconds from eight starts, good for earnings of $459,080. We bought Great Attack (he already had that name)

They asked, ”Why was he so cheap?” and “Who is that sire?” and “Were the x-rays perfect?” etc. Usually our auction selections are a He had a difficult personality, At the end of his most recent race,
he got tired, but he needed that race after the long layoff he’d had, and we fixed what was an equipment problem from that effort. That layoff was from a foot problem that is gone now, as he now wears glue-on shoes — no more nails from nasty blacksmiths — he had tender tootsies.
This past year he’s already beaten last year’s

Arch Juvenile Rallies to Land GIII Bourbon S. Posted: 5:42 PM ET
During a dramatic stretch drive, Klaravich Stables’ Animal Spirits (Arch) stormed up the center of the course to gradiate by 3/4 of a length in the GIII Bourbon S. at Keeneland. Comfortably behind pacesetter Here Comes Frazier (Badge of Silver) in the early going, the Al Stall Jr. trainee made up plenty of ground rounding the final turn, but appeared to have his work cut out for him in his attempt to reel in the frontrunner. In a dramatic reversal of form, however, Here Comes Frazier, who appeard to be home free in midstretch, almost took Julien Leparoux over the rail after feeling the whip. The favorite’s defection opened the door for Coalport (Kitten’s Joy), who initially seized control before being overtaken by the fast-closing 8-1 chance Animal Spirits. Lucky Chappy (Ire) (High Chapparal {Ire}) was third. Final time for the 1 1/16-mile test was 1:44.24. Lifetime Record: 3-2-0-1, $114,722.
